I’m going to refer to my boyfriend as Doug… because that was his name and it just seems weird typing my boyfriend over and over.
Why did I want to go to Senior prom with Doug? Because I didn’t get to go to Jr. prom with him, DUH! And why was that? Because he broke up with me. Somehow in my young brain this made sense; break up with Tony, so I could go to senior prom with Doug, even though Tony wanted to go with me and Doug had proved that he didn’t know what he wanted.
The senior prom rolled around. I had gotten just what I had wanted or so I thought.
PIZZA?
All of my friends were going to a fancy restaurant for dinner and then heading to the prom. Some girls were lucky enough to ride in a limo. That’s what Tony and his girlfriend did.
As for me, I was picked up by Doug in his car and we went to a pizza restaurant. I tried to not be disappointed, but pizza? I somehow convinced myself it was a romantic dinner for two.
No Dancing
When we arrived at the dance I was informed that we would not be dancing. What?? I wish I could remember the exact reason, but I can’t. So, after my no frills car ride and pizza dinner, I couldn’t even dance… not even a slow dance.
Mystery Bathroom Girl
My friends were dancing and hanging out together and I really wanted to be with them.
Doug had started hanging out with a new group of friends and I didn’t know anyone in our group. On a trip to the bathroom, I was approached by one of the girls from this new group. She said, “I hope you don’t think there is anything going on between Doug and me. We’re just friends.” OKAY? I had never met this person and she was there with a date.
Where Is Doug?
Upon leaving the bathroom I found Doug out on the dance floor.
He was dancing! Not only dancing, but he was dancing with an ex-girlfriend Why? He had to because she threatened to kiss him.
If I had known that was the key to getting a dance, I would have been willing to threaten him with a kiss. HAHAHA!
HOME EARLY
After the dancing incident, there was a group of my friends who confronted Doug about the way he was treating me. Threats were made and I was taken home early, with a promise that he would make it up to me the next night.
THE NEXT NIGHT
The date didn’t happen.
My older sister kept insisting he was out on a date with the mystery bathroom girl. She took me to downtown Rio Linda in search of Doug. We found him at the four way stop in the middle of that small town and who was in the car? Mystery Bathroom Girl!
That Annoying Bathroom Girl
After that night, I would go to the bathroom at school and bathroom girl, no longer a mystery, would be hanging out in the bathroom doing what bathroom girls do.
One day as I was leaving and I heard her say, “She is such a BITCH.” Now, you need to know that I was very shy and timid back then, but something came over me. I turned around and confronted her and said, “Oh I am, AM I?”
I actually stood up for myself and didn’t die!
We don’t always get what we want or deserve, but we do get what we go after. I pushed to get what I wanted without seeing that what I wanted wasn’t what Doug wanted. We all made mistakes and I believe we learned from them. Doug is a great person. He and his wife became good friends of ours.
