Life Changing Events

On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members aboard.

On February 9, 1986, Halley’s Comet reached its perihelion—the closest it got to the Sun during its short trip into the inner Solar System and between the orbits of Mercury and Venus—before disappearing into the depths of the outer Solar System.

One of the biggest events of 1986 was the Chernobyl power plant disaster in Europe, with a reactor exploding on April 26th, releasing radioactive material across the whole of Europe and making the nearby town of Pripyat uninhabitable. To this day, this remains the worst nuclear accident in the whole of human history.

April 3, IBM unveils the PC Convertible, the first laptop computer. It was also the first IBM computer to use a 3.5” floppy disk, which eventually became the standard. Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) was designed by Mark Crispin as a remote mailbox protocol.

What was a hit in 1986?

The longest running number-one singles of 1986 are “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne and Friends and “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles, which each logged four weeks at number-one. The Cosby Show was the most popular TV series, Top Gun was the highest-grossing film, and That’s What Friends Are For was the top song on the charts.
